How Long Does RBT Certification Last?

Let’s start this guide by discussing the validity of the RBT certification. The RBT certification is valid for one year from the date of issue.

After the expiry date, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board provides an additional 30-day grace period and gives you a second chance to renew your certification. If you fail to renew it within the grace period, you need to apply a fresh application.

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board puts all the effort into keeping their registered behavior technicians informed about all new updates and research in the behavioral science field. The board has set certain guidelines to maintain your RBT certification.

BACB Requirements for Maintaining RBT Certification

To maintain your RBT certification, you must receive ongoing supervision, follow the RBT ethics code, and renew your certification annually by paying a $35 renewal fee ($50 late fee). Here’s a detailed breakdown of BACB requirements for maintaining the RBT certification.

  • You must practice under the close supervision of a qualified BCBA or BCaBA.
  • You must receive at least 5% supervision of hours you spend providing behavior analytic services.
  • You will have at least TWO face-to-face meetings each month with your supervision.
  • If you work in a group of RBTs, you must have at least ONE one-on-one meeting with your supervisor every month.
  • At least once, your supervisor observes you while delivering behavior-analytic services to your client.
  • You must follow RBT Ethics Code 2.0 guidelines while working with clients.

How To Renew RBT Certification?

The RBT certification renewal process is easy. If your certificate isn’t marked “Inactive,” you can submit a renewal application through your BACB account. You have to pay the certificate renewal fee of $35 and pass the RBT Renewal Competency Assessment.

The RBT Renewal Competency Assessment is essential for the renewal of RBT certification. It assesses the RBT’s proficiency and ability to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world scenarios.

Here’s a step-by-step process to renew your RBT certification:

Step 1: Complete Your Competency Assessment

You need to complete your RBT renewal competency assessment 45 days before the expiry date of your RBT certification. A certified BCBA will asses your competency to work as a registered behavior technician.

Step 2: Submit Renewal Application

After completing your RBT renewal competency assessment, you must visit the BABC website and submit the renewal application.

Step 3: Pay the Renewal Fee

The next step is to pay the RBT certification renewal fee. You can pay the renewal fee online or by mail-in cheque. Online payment method is a better choice for the fast renewal process.

Step 4: Wait For Upto 2 Weeks

After submitting your renewal application, it may take up to two weeks to renew your certification. So, wait until your RBT certificate gets renewed.

How To Renew After 30-days Of Expiry Date?

BACB offers a 30-day grace period to renew your RBT certification. However, if you fail to renew within the grace period, you must complete 40 hours of training and competency assessment and pass the RBT exam again.

So, starting your renewal process approximately two months before expiration is advisable. An early start will give you ample time to complete the renewal process.
